I'll never know why this sort of ornamentation implies elegance or beauty. To me it's — fake. Why? Because it's a knock-off of the original form which was stone.

I'd understand the cost associated with this level of detail when it was hand-carved, but when it became a mass-produced replica it lost that quality.
