Forget the large holes in the floor — those can be avoided easily. It's the fear of standing on a rotted board and falling through to the floor below which is most worrisome.

Due to a lack of roof, this wood deck has been exposed to the elements for over a decade. It's not weathering well, as expected. It was never meant to be structural without protection from water and the freeze/thaw cycle.
