Ship Breaking (Feb 4, 2006)

Here we are back at the Shipbreaking Yards...

TV publicity... a few weeks ago, Rob and I were interviewed by CBC television for a short piece about urban exploration. I realize this is last minute notice but the show is airing today at (from what I can tell) 2pm EST (check your local listings for exact times!). It's in French, is on the CBC French television station, and is titled 'Ça vaut le détour'. The producer tells me our segment will be in the final 5 minutes of the show (where I expect our interviews will be subtitled). I'm curious to see how it'll turn out...

And I know this is begging, but if anyone is eager/crazy enough to be able to capture the segment and send it to me as a quicktime/avi file, I'd be forever grateful! :)

Exhibition news: Diane Purdie and I have 20 odd pieces on display (photographs & paintings/collage) at the Newmarket Theatre for the next month and a half. I think we're tentatively naming the show 'Memories from the Day Shift' -- yeah, it's all industrial-related goodness. If you're not attending a performance at the theatre, you can stop by between 1-5:30pm Mon-Fri, and Noon-4pm on Saturdays. If you're in the area, have a look! I've mostly got Bethlehem Steel photos on display as well as some older shots.

And, here's a map to the theatre. And of course, the In Transit exhibition at the Toronto Free Gallery is still up and running (a little closer to home for you Toronto folk).

160 seconds? did I read that right? I like this shot, from the cables in the foreground right through to the clouds in the background.

When I was working at Hearn and Lakeview, I got to go onboard a number of lake carriers for a tour and they usually gave you coffee and sometimes a snack. The ship usually stayed for as long as 18 hours so many of the crew would get cabs into Toronto. Wives and girlfriends would often be waiting for the ship to arrive and would be at the dockside when it left.

this light here is gorgeous. your stuff reminds me of edward burtinsky (sp?) sometimes. too bad i didn't get to see that tv interview. i'm a huge sucker for french canadian tv. the accent is guaranteed fun. so cute/quirky.

This is a great shot. I love the rope in the foregroud. It makes the ship look all the more massive.

I think this is the best picture yet of the shipbreaking yard. This is what I would expect to see if I were to visit a place such as that. Really cool shot!!!

Missed you TV appearance, this shot is sweet though! Did you get permission to visit the yards, or was it an adventure? Looks like a fantastic place.

I like the subject. Not too hot on the lighting - too much contrast for my likes, but not every shot can be taken at dawn or dusk. Congrats on the show! Well-earned.

Ships have always been afavorite of mine the first kind of architecture I wanted to go into was naval architecture. These images are full of wonderful contrast.
