6.0s | f8 Shopping Cart (Dec 2, 2004) There was a lot of hesitation before deciding to post this. It's a little odd in terms of composition, in that the central space is empty and is framed by the bench and shopping cart (that's dedicated to *you* Bob). There's nothing to actually see in the middle so it's a little odd.. still, failed experiments can be useful.

Au contraire, this works very well, with the light, shadow, and texture in the central concrete plenty interesting. The echoing between the cart and the bench grids gives it energy; and the hues in the bottom part of the foto are beautiful.Could this be the beginning of The Shopping Cart Period? rs

If you filtered the picture (which I hope you didnt) you used to much then. The picture would of obviously been better if you would of taken a wider shot with a little more light. Good try though.

I understand your hesitation on posting (I almost always have that with *every* shot, though). I'm not sure that I agree with Kevin that it needs more light, since the top background already needs burning down and the dynamic range was reached/exceeded anyway. Even the addition of a reflector would have erased the shadows, judging from the angle. The patterns/reflection/shadows are what makes this, so maybe they could be worked with by upping the contrast with histogram/curves and then burning down the upper background to bring out the lines of the concrete. Looking at it from a darkroom attitude, I believe that's the approach I would have taken with a real print (plus print it on Ilford Galleria, so you might try taking a look at it that way by making it a rich greyscale image). Hope this helps. Sometimes these experiments make for the most interesting photo of the day. Thanks.

The shopping cart looks like it's been waiting for the bus for a long time.

I like it ok, I think once you realise the two objects are divided by glass it makes a lot more sense stylistically.

UHH -- something wrong with this image? I THINK NOT! There is no such thing as a bad cart photo! The light is superb -- the compostion exquisite -- colors outstanding... I would be proud to have this image in my portfolio... Of course, you already knew that... I'm at home -- laying in bed -- dying from a bad cold -- or perhaps the flu -- THIS shot is exactly what the doctor ordered.... I'm feeling so much better! Seriously -- thanks so much -- don't listen to those naysayers like Miles -- he takes photos of camera screens --

YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! You can take the most common items and make them look beautiful. You truly have the eye of a photographer. Maybe one day I will too.....nice work, keep it up.

i'm glad you decided to post this: i find it poetic, with its glow and its intricate shadows, and the composition is intriguing.

The shot's a bit on the abstract side which makes it a bit difficult to critique. Given the subject matter and what you had to work with, there isn't really anything I would change. I would suggest toning down the channel effect you're using though. It just looks a bit like a canned photoshop filter. I think you've been successful with this treatment in the past because you've used in a subtle manner. Here, especially towards the bottom, I just find that it's been applied too heavily. It was the first thing I noticed.

I love the contrast between the metal cart and the orangey light ahead. To me, it conveys a little sense of adventure.

i really like this one. the framing works for me.. i find the uncentered subject matter interesting.
