The Blood Red River

Voted 3.7/5.0 (36 votes) — Rate it!  1 2 3 4 5 (5=best)

This is the reason I wished to return to Sudbury.

Last year, Andrew and I had intended to find some of the iron oxide-stained rivers which Ed Burtynsky had made famous with his photographs and somewhere along the way we got lost. Intending to take the correct path this year we did indeed find what we were looking for, but on a scale far smaller than hoped for. For scale, that small rock in the lower-left corner of this photo is approximately 5 inches in length -- I was hoping to find a river 20 feet in width. Still, the colour was fantastic especially when seen alongside the black tailings forming the banks of the stream so for that I was happy.
