Vibrators
Apparently these things on the roof vibrated gently to produce an even flow of material into the equipment below (which has been removed in this case). I just like the idea of many inverted pyramids hanging from the ceiling. I'm sure the acoustics would be unique...

The constant squeaking of the feed screws under these storage bins would not have been tolerable to non-industrial workers. The sound of the vibrators and rappers would further contribute to one's discomfort.
