The buildings still look good on the exterior - this one shows it was built in 1916.

From the outside it appears as if the building has never been touched.

I would just like to say that this site is a part of not just whitby's history but Canada also. Many people who were injured in the war were allowed to use their facilities. I think that it's a shame that they are taking it down to replace it with new housing. This is a part of our history. I am currently a resident of whitby myself, and always enjoy exploring the ground. FIGHT TO KEEP IT GOIng

I agree with you james, i would love to be able to keep these buildings "alive" (sorta a bad word to use but anyways), they are part of our heritage, and historygt;

I was actually there earlyer today, I got the chance to crawl into a window and peak inside these things. I will post images on my personal site once I develop them in photography class, and scan them. Love the whitby psych, It is a big part of me because apparently someone in my family was in there, And I am doing research to see if I can find a room he was in, or something along those lines. The best part of the whole experience had to be the building right across this one, slightly to the left. There is a doorway where you can see a stairwell, and the door leads to nowhere (Probably previously a balconay. but it is no longer there). Nice image, favorite one of them all.

I actually forgot to ask you, Did you stumble upon one of the rooms in that building to the left of it, just across the little walk way, that looked like it was a little kid's room? That room made me shiver, I found it kind of sad that there were little kids in the psych. The room is pure white with a small window, and there is baloons painted on the walls, which made me thing it was either a Kid's room, or a room to calm people down? Let me know if you saw the room I am talking about .

This is building 19. It is the former Admitting building where the duty doctor would check an incoming patient for obvious signs of infectious diseases and would make an initial assessment. Then the person would go to the S.T.A.T. ward located in building #26 (demolished 1994 or 1995) where s/he would be assessed fully to determine their condition and map out a course of treatment.

And you're right James. This site was leased by the Canadian Government during World War I to treat victims of shell shock. (I believe the term today is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). If I'm wrong, pls correct me.

I really like the psych because it is a part of our history and i live about a block away from it.

I Love the Whitby Psych myself. It's an absolute shame people are thearing it down but it's even more of a shame that people went in there just to trash it. If everybody wants the psych to stay and they wanna fight for it why don't we do that? Times running out because they're all ready to take it down.

I thought that Whitby Psych was one of the coolest places I have ever been. I have been to many haunted places and I still think this one was the best. I do not know what about it makes it so good but it is. I have brought things home from there and sometimes I like looking back and want to go back and see more cool things. But no matter where I go i will always like whitby psych

jim (Oct 14 2005, 11:34 am)

I gotta say I'm a Whitby resident, and it would be a shame to get rid of this building. Its pretty damn sweet.
