I dunno.. But there were a few rooms like this where the door had the little window slot at the top and one of them was combined with an adjoining room seperated by a thick metal grill - probably for observation or protection. Not the most pleasant of places... |

THese rooms are seclusion rooms, for when patients were putting themselfs or others at risk.

first of all, its not an isolation room, yes they have them, no they arent padded, but they also don't have metal grills. Interrogation is NEVER done. I know you are just suggesting but its things like this that give people the wrong image about what goes on in places like these, they are there to help not hurt them in any way shape of form. These buildings are a psycatric care facility not a prison. Alos, you people shouldn't be in these buildings they are closed up for a reason, THEY ARE UN SAFE! espestice which was probibly in the room you called the attic. Some of the buildings are over a hundred years old, there is probibly lead paint as well.

I have done a lot of research on the former Ontario asylums, particularily on the former Lakeshore Psych in Toronto. And yes, it IS, or rather was, an isolation room. By the way, many asylums, even those more modern, still looked like prisons. If not, why the fucking straightjacket?

Ya Agatha you're totally right. I mean a lot of bad shit has gone down in psychs which in all likeliness do not anymore but considering the age of some of those buildings I wouldn't doubt it. I also find it funny when people say things and clearly don't know what they are talking about. A. It's spelt asbestos. B. I don't think anyone is goign to lick the walls so lead paint really is of no concern. Explore away!! It's a cool place why the hell not

Electroshock, lobotomy, insulin shock, isolation cells, straightjackets... yeah, psychiatry did help a lot of people!

Ignorance has no other choice but control. Still, lets not get carried away, isolation for long periods, straight jackets etc. was generally thought to be in the best interests of the patient at the time, although was at times used for 'punishment' for 'challenging behaviour'. Still, we've come a long way, and its great one picture can cause some intelligent reflection and discussion. Nice one Kendall!

Remember that only 10 years ago we did not have the medical technology (medicines) we have today, let alone 30 or 50 years ago: When a psychiatric patient went into a psychosis and became violent the only remedy was to lock them up until they became calm, however long that was. Today that is controlled with medications. I can tell you first hand about this because my son is Bi-Polar and before he was diagnosed he would go Manic and become violent (the cops had to be called several times). Once the Psychatrist diagnosed the problem and put him on the proper medications, the manic phase of his Bi-Polar disease is now under control, and he able to live a normal life with his wife and kids.

You people are funny!! It's photography... not a history lesson, but nevertheless it's entertaining!

I know Cottage five had an isolation room you had to walk by to get to the TV room, lol. I remember a kid named patrick who could only say yes and no was in there once screaming. You could see in but the tint prevented you from being to see out. so to settle this question if they used isolation rooms I remember first hand there being one.

I was going to say, ISOLATION not interrogation. Interrogation makes me think of a WWII movie with the nazis...we haf ways uff making you talk!

Amanda, they are isolation rooms ive worked there and thats exactly what they are. Your right they dont have padding on the walls but they also had beds in there with straps that you see on tv and if the patient does go "insane" they use force to put the patient in the room and strap them down and give them a needle to calm them down then the nurses will decide when its safe to let him out of the bed but he will still be in the suclusion room for a period of time. Its not to hurt them but when they a triggerd they will react in a way that you have never seen and they become unbelievably strong and its what you have to do.The abestos is in the underground tunnels only so if your really that scared get a mask. And who cares if people go in the building its there decision everyone knows there unsafe but ive been in the buildings that they had half broke down and i was fine you just have to be careful when your there thats it. and there a part of history and if the buildings were still up then i suggest everyone who comes or lives in whitby to go to them because they are an amazing experience that you will never forget.

Yes there are tons of bad stuff that goes on in these places even in the new psychs just as bad things happen in old age homes. Wish it didn't but it does. Actually the workers (spoke with one personally) sign wavers stating that they are not supposed to talk about what goes on inside the mental hospital.
