Common Room

There was very little light on the ground floor which was typical in most buildings on the site due to the boarded windows. The one window which wasn't covered provided enough light to suggest the items which were in the common room - chairs, desks, tables, coat racks, etc. Unfortunately composition was difficult given that we could barely see what we were shooting...

I have a huge fascinaton for old institutional buildings. Have worked in a few in England and, to be honest, theres no difference between them. They can easily look oppressive, but the history is more of a mixed bag.

Seeing these buildings like this brings everything back. Seiing how long these buildings have been there for.

I remember Cottage 5 in 1988. The basement was used for working out and they had a map of the tunnels next to the locked door. You had to be on level 3 to be aloud down there. They had a room on the top floor next to the TV lounge where they locked you in if you were unmanageable. They stripped you and gave you a security gown and sheets. All the bedroom windows were caged, the windows on the main floor barely opened more then an inch. The food served came from the Whitby hospital that also serviced the Whitby jail, which has also been closed and demolished. Cottage 5 at that time was for youth and young adults. I remember doctor voizy that worked there at the time, had an Australian accent. The time there was short and weird. The movies they had for the TV room were all pirated copies. During the day the workers spent a lot of time socializing with each other and smoked constantly, health standards then were definitely different. I was 13 then. I drove by it a few times seeing it all boarded up. It is all so surreal thinking back and seeing it now in its haunting condition. too bad I can’t post the pictures I took. I should put them up on another site and give the link, later
